Benjamin Franklin: An American Life describes the amazing life of a Founding Father.  New Democrats will especially take note of his values - free enterprise, individual responsibilty, giving back to the community, tolerance and other values New Democrats still push to this day.
The Conquerors tells the fascinating story of how Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, during the latter stages of World War II, put the pieces in place to make Germany into a peaceful-loving democracy.  Beschloss' work will make you proud to be an American - and a Democrat.
Theodore Rex focuses on the presidency of one of America's  greatest reformers. Edmund Morris' work captures both the substance and color of Theodore Roosevelt's fascinating administrations. The book reads like a fascinating novel. Luckily for us, it is non-fiction.
John Adams
John Adams is written by one of America's finest authors, David McCullough. In addition to covering our second President's political career,  McCullough looks into Adams's family life, especially his relationship with his wife, Abigail Adams, a revolutionary thinker in her own right.
April 1865
April 1865 is about the end of the Civil War, a time when the United States' future truly hung in the balance. Unlike many other places that fought civil wars, America reconciled and became one again. Winik tells us why. Simply, it was leadership committed to unity.
Setting the World Ablaze
Setting the World Ablaze is about the personal motives of three men who made the United States a reality - Washington, Adams and Jefferson. Ferling focuses on how these conservatives - successful members of the colonial elite - were transformed into radical revolutionaries.
Citizen Soldiers
Citizen Soldiers takes the reader to the front lines of the Allied invasion after D-Day, to the Battle of the Bulge to Germany's surrender. Ambrose has an uncanny ability to show the war through the eyes of ordinary soldiers, who humbly tell us their brutal and often heroic stories.
The Fourth Turning
The Fourth Turning, building on the authors' theory of cyclical generations and lessons from history, makes hopeful and challenging predictions about this decade. If correct, America's economic, social and political landscape will be nothing like it is today.
American Exceptionalism

American Exceptionalism helps us understand what is unique about America by contrasting it with other countries. On a number of important fronts, Seymour Martin Lipset, the leading sociologist of our time, explains why the US has developed so differently than other nations.
Washington Goes to War
Washington Goes to War traces how World War II transformed our nation's capital from a sleepy Southern town into the world power center. For visitors and residents alike, David Brinkley's nostalgic portrait of Washington is engaging, illustrative and humorous.
D-Day June 6, 1944
D-Day June 6, 1944 may be the most definitive account of the 24 hours that changed the course of World War II. In his compelling way, Ambrose shows why German troops, thought to be invincible, were defeated by citizen soldiers from democratic nations.
The Fifties
The Fifties directly challenges the conventional wisdom that not much important happened during this time. In many and important ways, the seeds were being planted for the next  turbulent decade. Halberstam's narrative is brilliant, engaging and thoughtful.
Generations
Generations uses its analysis of generational trends in American history and makes predictions for the future - big changes are coming soon. Since much of the "Third Way" philosophy is based on the interests and values of Boomers and Xers, this book is must reading for New Dems.
Democracy in America
Democracy in America is one of best political analyses ever conducted of the United States. This masterpiece by Alexis de Tocqueville is required reading for anyone serious about American history. You won't believe the book was written over 200 years ago.
