New Democrat Update - July 1996
Welcome!

With this edition, the New Democrat Update is now being faxed to an additional 200 Colorado elected officials and candidates for public office.  If you are a new recipient and would like to know more about the DLC, please send us an e-mail.

New Progressive Declaration

The Progressive Foundation, a nonpartisan research and educational institution associated with the DLC, has released "The New Progressive Declaration: A Political Philosophy for the Information Age."  With the goal of reshaping the political debate for the 21st century, the Declaration calls for replacing old policies and institutions that protect people from adversity to new ones that enable people to take care of themselves.  It offers five key strategies:

Restoring the American Dream by expanding wealth, increasing opportunity and enhancing the security of workers

Reconstructing our social order by strengthening families, attacking crime, and empowering the urban poor

Renewing democracy by challenging the special interests and returning power to citizens and local institutions

Defending our common civic ideals and the spirit of tolerance, enabling America to draw strength and unity from its diversity

Confronting global confusion by building new international structures of political and economic freedom

If you would like more information or a copy of the report, please call the national DLC at 800-546-0027.

Leadership Training Series

The DLC is conducting a leadership training series that presents the organization's agenda of progressive ideas, mainstream values and innovative, non-bureaucratic approaches to governing.  Democratic leaders from across the country will be discussing specific intellectual and practical tools with the nation's best thinkers from private industry, academia and politics.

Two separate but identical sessions will be held on July 18-19 and August 1-2 at the Washington Court Hotel in DC  The series continues with another meeting at the Democratic National Convention (August 26-29) in Chicago.  These meetings are always productive, especially for elected officials, candidates and other folks interested in staying ahead of the public policy and political debate.

If you would like more information, call the DLC at 800-546-0027.

Talent Pool

In the event that current political trends continue, the DLC is accepting referrals of qualified New Democrats to potentially fill vacant posts in the next Clinton Administration.  To submit a qualified candidate for inclusion in the DLC Talent Pool, you will need to fill out an Application Questionnaire and Recommendation Form.  The national DLC will then follow up and request a resume and references.

To request the application and recommendation forms, or for more information on the DLC Talent Pool, contact Ann Negvesky at 703-208-1072.

Politics '96

As reported last month, the Colorado DLC will be hosting a panel discussion with Governor Roy Romer, Minority State House Leader Peggy Kerns and representatives from the national DLC.  New Democrats will be invited to this session to discuss a policy message and agenda that works and wins in 1996.

Due to scheduling conflicts, this day of events has been moved from mid-July to sometime in late July or August.  As soon as times are set and details are available, the Colorado DLC will let you know.

Feedback

For each of the last 10 months, The New Democrat Update has been sent to hundreds of elected officials, candidates, DLC leaders, members and others.  The response has been very gratifying.

While compliments are always nice, please let the Colorado DLC know how this fax can be improved to better meet your needs.  If you do not let us know, we will never know.  E-mail us with any comments.
