New Democrat Update - September 1996

Democratic National Convention
The DLC sponsored a series of forums and workshops on a variety of issues in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention. Subjects ranged from questions on economic opportunity and provocative political analysis to those issues that Democrats do not like to talk about, but should - values, teen pregnancy, crime, entitlements and more.
New Democrats from Colorado were very well represented. Governor Romer spoke on why and how Democrats should be thinking and governing "outside the box." State House Minority Leader Peggy Kerns spoke on ways New Democrats can restore public trust in the political process and presented Colorado's experience in a workshop on teen pregnancy.
Politics '96
The national and Colorado DLC are hosting a panel discussion with Governor Roy Romer, State House Minority Leader Peggy Kerns and Ed Kilgore, Political Director of the national DLC. You will be invited in another letter or fax to this public luncheon that will discuss a policy message and agenda that works and wins in 1996.
The luncheon is scheduled for September 30 at 11:30 AM in downtown Denver. The rest of the details will be sent to you later this week. Be sure to make it!
NCSL
The DLC's impact on state public policy grew with a strong presence in St. Louis at the recent Annual Conference of the National Association of State Legislators. State Rep. Kerns made presentations throughout the conference and joined national DLC President Al From for a reception Sunday evening. More than 500 people stopped by the DLC booth, where blueprints on welfare reform and battling teen pregnancy were hot ticket items.
Next Month
There is so much more, but unfortunately not enough space, to discuss President Clinton's recent decision to sign welfare reform legislation and the national DLC's Youth Voter Project. Look for information on both issues in next month's New Democrat Update!
